Resistance to Change

While at a networking event I had a conversation with several business owners regarding the tasks they performed each day and how they managed their time. Somehow our conversation veered towards the topic of change and how whether you are a business owner or an individual, it is essential and should be embraced, yet many people are not comfortable with the subject. Unknowingly, we encounter this phenomenon every day and act accordingly, so why is it so hard to accept?

Going into the city, I had just literally taken my seat on the train when we were told that the train was out of service and that the incoming train; due to a smoking condition, would be going on the F Avenue line. To get to my destination I was advised to take the next train to West 4th street; two stops past my objective, and transfer to the downtown platform in order to reach my final stop, Canal Street. Now I had two choices, I could embrace the change or I could go back home. Yes, there was a small sense of panic, since the added time meant I would be late; never mind the fact that I was already late. I also thought what if I miss my stop and end up having to go back home? The horror!

Yes, change brings fear! I have said it!

Well! I chose to embrace the change and had an opportunity to meet some remarkable people. One of them was a young woman who had just landed her first major account. An account to which the client; upon being asked “what was the budget for the project” indicated that “there was no budget figure”, which is like saying, “Madam, here is your Black American Express Card, on us! Enjoy!”

As simple as this example may be, we adjust every day, whether it is self- imposed or imposed upon us, it is necessary. Most importantly, change like time waits for no one.
